Acupuncture for Menopause

Menopause is the time that marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycles or reproductive years.  It’s diagnosed 12 months after a woman’s last period.  The period leading up to menopause are called perimenopause or menopausal transition.  During this time, there is a natural decline in reproductive hormones, estrogen and progesterone, that can cause changes not only to a woman’s menstrual cycle but her whole body.

Common symptoms include hot flashes and/or night sweats, vaginal dryness, reduced sex drive, sleep disturbances, moodiness or irritability, pain during sex, urinary problems, trouble focusing, or depression.

Perimenopause most often begins between the age of 45-55.  The average length of perimenopause is 4 years, but for some women it can be as short as a few months and for others it can be as long as 7-10 years.

Menopause requires no medical treatment.  However, if your menopausal symptoms are severe, there are treatments that can help relieve your signs and symptoms.  The traditional Western approach include hormone replacement therapy, vaginal estrogen, low dose antidepressants, Gabapentin, Clonidine, etc.

If you are interested in a more natural approach to ease your menopausal symptoms, you may want to give acupuncture a try.  Acupuncture can treat the whole body to reduce the severity of hot flashes and/or night sweats, relax the body, improve sleep, decrease anxiety, improve your mood, increase sex drive, etc.
