GB34 or Yanglingquan AKA Yang Mound Spring is located below the outside of the knee, in a tender depression 1 body inch anterior and inferior to the head of the fibula. For the lay person the fibula is the smaller of the two bones of the lower leg. According to Peter Deadman the author of the text A Manual of Acupuncture, the point has many uses. 1. Benefits the sinews and joints, 2. Activates the Gall Bladder Channel and alleviates pain, 3. Spreads Liver Qi and aides the outside of he ribcage under the axilla, 4. Clears Liver and Gall Bladder damp-heat which is one of 7 external pathogenic factors, which Chinese Medicine views as the cause of disease, 5. Harmonizes Shaoyang, which represents the meridians or energy pathways of the Triple Energizer and Gall Bladder channels. Another name used to describe GB 34 is the Influential Point of Tendons or Sinews which is a term to describe the soft tissue of the body which connects muscles to the bones.
Common disorders that are treated by GB34 are conditions that involve sudden contraction of the lower leg or muscles of the calves. GB34 can be useful to treat any condition which involves stiffness or tightness of the muscles or the bodies joints. This point is commonly used by Acupuncturists daily to treat musculoskeletal conditions. It can be used to treat neurological conditions such as numbness and pain or coldness or swelling of the hip, thigh, knee or feet. Sciatica which is usually caused by a herniated Lumbar Disc or spasm or contraction of the Piriformis muscle may also benefit from the use of this point. GB 34 in theory may also be used to benefit serious neurological disorders such as hemiplegia “paralysis of half of the body” or spasticity or atrophy which is commonly caused by a stroke. In the author of this articles opinion paralysis of one side of the body due to a stroke or similar neurological disorders is most effectively treated by the use of Scalp Acupuncture along with points similar to GB34 along the Shaoyang Zone or lateral aspect of the body. The benefits of GB34 is not limited to the lower half of the body. It is useful for treatment of the tendons, muscles and sinews of the neck, shoulders and lower spine. It is useful for the treatment of Tennis Elbow, Plantar Fasciitis of the sole of the foot, Achilles Tendinosis, or other similar over use conditions of the upper or lower extremities.
In summary Acupuncture Point GB34 can be used to treat pain, stiffness, cramping or muscle spasm or contraction anywhere in the body. It is also used for the treatment of sprains/sprains of the sinews or muscle from over use or an external trauma. Weather caused by over use like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, or Game Keepers Thumb or external trauma such as a motor vehicle accident. It can be used to treat Whiplash Syndrome or Sports Injuries which may cause damage to the sinews i.e. the ligaments or muscles of the spine or upper or lower extremities. It is not typically used alone but, is used in combination with other distal treatment points (points used remotely from the site of pain). Typically, the Acupuncturist uses a combination of distal and local points (points which are in the injured or painful area) in a typical treatment session.
