Five Element Acupuncture

Five Element AcupunctureAcupuncture is the oldest form of health care that predates recorded history. As old as the art is, many different beliefs and philosophies have emerged and formed throughout its history. Classical Five-Element acupuncture is an ancient form of the practice that is deeply rooted in the Taoist beliefs that each human body and mind represent the universe and they follow the flow of nature.
Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood are the five elements that were recognized as basic the constitution of both nature and the human body. The Classical Five Element Practitioners have tried to understand functions and interactions of the elements and how the human body presents its imbalance when the elements are not functioning at a dynamic, healthy and optimal capacity.
Modern practitioners of this ancient art try to measure the status of a patient using ancient techniques such as pulse taking, visual and auditory examinations to determine which element is in excess and which is in deficient. When imbalances of a person are determined, they use acupuncture points to generate or promote a certain element, and reduce others to achieve harmony. The human body is believed to repair and recover from illnesses when it reaches harmonious status of all elements.

What Can I Expect From Acupuncture?

A Five-Element Practitioner looks to determine patient’s congenital constitution and sees patients as a whole, not a group of indications. Patients are expected to be questioned in various subjects that are not related to medical issues, such as personality and preferences because they provide extremely valuable information to determine the element patients are lacking in or in excess of.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

The answer is yes and no. Some points are absolutely painless, at the same time, some points can have lingering throbbing pain. Acupuncturists who follow ancient style of element acupuncture uses points that can be quite painful, but experienced practitioners can insert needles with minimal pain.

What Can Acupuncture Help With?

As often as the question is asked, it is very difficult to answer because element acupuncturists do not get caught up with indications and western diagnosis. For example, migraine headaches can be a diagnosis for western medicine, but for element acupuncturists, migraine headaches are one of many clues they need to collect to determine what element is excessive or deficient. Long story short, numerous physical and emotional conditions show significant improvement when right elements are treated properly.
