Maintain healthy immunity with Acupuncture
- Posted on: Jun 18 2020
Its been four months since we’ve been told to shelter in place. Now, many of us are attempting to resume our lives, or at least, enjoy our summer. Some are attempting to cautiously widen their bubble, others are back to life as usual. But in the back of our minds we wonder, and even fear that Covid will come back. Many of the experts that we are listening to on the news are saying that it is not a matter of if, but when. And to what degree? Will it be even stronger? There are so many questions, and uncertainties.
However one thing that we can be certain of, is that it is important to keep our immune system strong in order to fight off this virus. Those who have the highest risk of contracting a severe case of Covid have underlying issues that compromise the immune system, and/or increase inflammatory markers.
A healthy diet, exercise, and even being in the sun, which signals our body to make more vitamin D, can help increase our immune system, but did you know that regular trips to your Acupuncturist can strongly boost immunity and decrease inflammation. We all know that acupuncture can help relieve the stress and anxiety that accompanies our current situation, and even improve our sleep, but more and more studies performed in the US are revealing the biomechanics of how acupuncture works and what it is capable of. Recent studies reveal that acupuncture can actually increase levels of T-cells in the body. These are the fighter cells that fight off bacteria and viruses in the body. Studies also demonstrate that acupuncture produces biological responses that are anti-inflammatory in nature. Some research points to its interaction with neuropeptides in the brain, others to the stimulation of the Vagus nerve.
Talk to your acupuncturist for advice on how to build immunity and decrease inflammation through diet, lifestyle and acupuncture so that we can all stay safe in the coming months.
